Dreamwork
Ancient Egyptians and Greeks believed dreams were messages sent by the gods to shape the dreamerâs mind. Sigmund Freud told us dreams are caches of unfulfilled wishes and a window to the psyche. Some cultures make no distinction between dreaming and waking life. Scientists sometimes claim dreams are the brainâs way of unloading unnecessary information like a computer clearing away data. Artists and mystics mine dreams for ideas and inspiration. Prophetic dreams allow the dreamer to witness future places, events, and happenings.
The subconscious mind becomes observable while sleeping. We are not bound by the laws of physics or time in our sleep, so we weightlessly fly, converse with the dead, and kiss strangers until we wake up sweaty, breathless, and often full of emotion. Dreams help us tackle problems, process anxieties, even rehearse for scenarios we might encounter in waking life.
Improving dream recall is like building the strength and flexibility of your intuitive muscles. The more you focus on the art of dreaming, the more substantive they become. Keep a small journal next to your sleeping area so you can record your dream scenarios upon waking. Begin the process by journaling briefly, noting your thoughts and feelings, before falling asleep.
Dreams tend to evaporate quickly upon waking. Keep your eyes closed and jog your memory upon waking by asking yourself, âWas I just dreaming?â See if some fragment or vision comes back to you. Rather than trying to figure out what your dream means when you are writing it down, focus on recording the details. Interpret the symbols later using the following method:
Deconstruct a symbol from a dream the same way you assess a tarot symbolâs meaning.
Select the most notable symbol you had in a recent or recurrent dream.
Symbol:
What symbol means to me:
How this meaning relates to my current life:
Example
Symbol: Beheaded man
What Symbol Means to Me: Beheaded man = Not being connected to the physical body
How This Relates to My Current Life: I am not connected to my physical body when I am in a place of distress. I need to learn how to reconnect during stress and anxiety.
Once you have figured out how the symbol relates to your current life, pull a tarot card for advice on how to integrate this issue.
Example: The Six of Swords is drawn, which tells me to cut the emotional cords of old pains so I can stop cutting off my head to spite my body and move in a state of disconnection. I must learn to cut away the bad and embrace the good so I can move forward to better times.
The Dream Oraculum
An oraculum is a divine announcement or prophecy. Consider your dreams as divine messages from the major arcana. Use the oraculum to discover which major arcana sent the dream to you. Once you identify the archetype responsible for your dream, you can gain further information on why it is important and what it means for your waking life. Use the formula below and reduce the numbers until you arrive at their major arcana equivalent.
